Students who had 4 or more years of music instruction outperformed most other groups on the SAT exams, scoring an average of 56 points higher on the verbal portion of the test and 39 points higher on the math portion than students with no coursework or experience in the arts. Scores for those with coursework in music appreciation were 60 points higher on the verbal and 39 points higher on the math portion.
If you have a child in middle school or younger, now is the time to enroll them in music lessons so that they will experience the benefits in time to help them succeed in college. The research is continuing to accumulate and the proof is there. If your child has a New Year’s resolution to do better in school, here’s a way to help them achieve his or her goal. Find a music teacher for them and give them the long-term benefits.
