Most people moan and groan when their insurance bill comes due each year, and some people tend to skip the insurance altogether, which can turn out to be a big mistake. I certainly discovered this last summer, when on June 8th (incidentally, that was World Ocean Day), a half-hour plumbing leak turned into a claim for tens of thousands of dollars. Fortunately, because I had the right insurance, all my musical instruments and sheet music, as well as computers, temporary lodging and teaching premises, and even the increase in my cell phone bills, were completely covered.

Be sure to review your insurance needs with an actual, real, live agent, and make sure that you are adequately covered. If you teach out of your home, you’ll need to rent a space while repairs are being done, as well as covering all your instruments, supplies, music, CDs, DVDs, playback equipment, computers, and the like.
